With the end of another school year coming to an end, theatre is beginning to prepare their staff for the yearly SOAPS performance. SOAPS stands for Senior One Act Plays, which gives seniors an opportunity to direct, and even write, their own shows to perform. This year, they will be performing “Pretty and the Monster,” a reenactment of “Beauty and the Beast”.
“Usually, everyone does a separate one act, however for this year’s performance, the seniors decided to come together and collaborate on one show,” junior Fernanda Montiel said. “We are performing the music for ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and calling it ‘Pretty and the Monster’, compiling talent from both choir and theatre.”
SOAPS is an important event for many students, especially seniors, as it gives them one final opportunity to show their acting skills off to an audience before saying their final goodbye.
“SOAPS is very important to me this year because it is technically my last year on a Brazoswood stage,” senior Cade Ingram said. “I love that I don’t feel pressured to be perfect, because it’s not supposed to be to broadway-level amazing like our past shows, it’s just a bunch of kids having fun dancing and singing.”
Many benefits come from performing the SOAPS show, such as increasing creativity, confidence, bonds between friends, and overall creating meaningful memories that students can keep with them for the rest of their lives.
“I started my journey in theatre through SOAPS,” senior Veronika Reznichenko said. “Last year, I decided to audition for SOAPS and got a role, which sparked my further interest in me to audition for the musical this past fall. I think it is an amazing way for people to try and apply themselves in theatre with a low risk setting.”
While many outstanding things come from SOAPS, there are a few difficulties that students experience.
“I think the most difficult thing is getting everyone to rehearsals,” Reznichenko said. “Since the cast is pretty big and we aren’t a full production, it’s hard to get a good schedule that works for everyone. However, we are on track to have a great show this coming May.”
However, despite these difficulties, there are many things that students enjoy about SOAPS, such as the freedom that comes with creating the show, to spending time with friends for one final performance.
“My favorite thing about SOAPS is the ability to have more control of the show, and getting to experience more of a directorial position,” senior Horacio Rodriguez said.
The SOAPS performance “Pretty and the Monster,” will be held in the theatre black box on May 3rd with no entry fee.
“Our ensemble is working super hard with learning choreography, music, and learning to have fun with it all,” junior Bailey Harris said. “To watch all of it come together is just super magical.”
