The first local Unified Track and Field Meet was held on Friday, March 21st, where students competed against Brazosport High School, where students, staff, and parents showed their support for the team.
“It felt really good when people were cheering me on at the meet and helped me run more and to the kids my age, never give up on your dreams, just keep chasing them,” freshman Jerric Montiel said. “My favorite event I ran was the relay and I love to be around a lot of people.”
The team is made up of members from the life skills program, which are paired with athletes who volunteered to help, showing team members how to perform and supporting them all the way through. Members of the teams participate in track and field, tennis, basketball, among other sports.
“I believe that the impact I will show them is that it’s important to represent something larger than yourself,” senior Robert Young said. “Volunteering at the unified track and field meet has shown me to treat everybody equally.”
The Unified Team is meant to help everyone understand that they are all the same, and encourage each other that they can accomplish anything no matter what obstacle they face.
“We help them by giving them everything they need, as in supplies, equipment, and a uniform, everything else is up to them and how they use their skills,” Young said. “I think I will impact them by showing them that regardless of who we are or what we look like, we are all the same no matter what.”
