IOWA CITY, IA — An early morning fire in a basement on Iowa City’s east side left a home damaged, displaced one resident and her dog, and prompted an investigation into what sparked the blaze. The Iowa City Fire Department estimated the loss at $65,000 after crews controlled the fire in about 10 minutes.
Officials said the woman living at the home made it out safely before firefighters arrived. No injuries were reported. The response began after a call about a possible basement fire in the 1700 block of E Street shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday.
Fire crews find smoke and flames after 3:41 a.m. call
The Iowa City Fire Department said it was dispatched at 3:41 a.m. after someone reported a possible fire in the basement of the house. Firefighters arrived six minutes later and saw fire and smoke coming from below the home.
Once on scene, crews worked quickly to stop the flames from spreading through the house. The department said the fire was under control 10 minutes after firefighters reached the property. The speed of the response likely helped limit the damage, though the home still sustained a significant loss.
Resident escapes safely with her dog before firefighters arrive
Firefighters said the woman who lives in the home had already gotten out by the time they reached the scene. She also got her dog out safely, avoiding any injuries to people or pets.
Although she was not hurt, the fire displaced her from the house. The American Red Cross is assisting her after the loss of her home. Officials did not say whether she will be able to return soon or how extensive the interior damage was beyond the estimated dollar figure.
